The Man:
The 2011 NZ Festival of Motor Racing will celebrate former NZ Formula 1 star Chris Amon and feature a number of the cars that the he owned and drove.
During his years on the Formula One motor racing circuit, from 1963 to 1976, Chris Amon managed to drive for a number of teams, Cooper, Ferrari, March, Tyrrell, BRM, Ensign, Wolf, Techno and Matra along with a stint at Reg Parnell Racing and also Ian Raby Racing.
Amon was born as the only child of wealthy sheep-owner Ngaio Amon. On leaving school, he persuaded his father to buy him an Austin A40 Special, which he entered in some minor local races and hillclimbs. He progressed to a 1.5 litre Cooper and then an old 2.5L Maserati 250F, but only began to draw attention when he drove the Cooper-Climax T51 which Bruce McLaren had used to win his maiden Grand Prix.
He was also extremely successful in Formula 5000, Sports Cars and Touring Cars, winning the 24 Hour of Le Mans with Bruce McLaren in a 7 Litre Ford GT40 in 1966, in 1967 also won the Daytona 24hour and the 1000ks race at Monza. The Tasman Series for F5000 was added to his successes in 1969 and in 1970 the prestigious BRDC International Trophy.

The Event:
The largest classic and historic car race meeting ever held in New Zealand will be happening in January 2011 over two weekends. Over 400 cars will be at Hampton Downs Motorsport Park and the following weekend at Pukekohe Park Raceway, to compete in the NZ Festival of Motor Racing.
It is expected that classic and historic racing cars, sports cars and saloon cars from New Zealand, Australia, United States of America, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, and Germany will be landing on New Zealand soil to participate.
The Festival will embrace the romantic time capsule that covered the 1940s through to the swinging 1960s. Visitors are encouraged to wear appropriate period clothing to get into the theme for the weekend.

The Circuit:
Hampton Downs Motorsport Park
Situated approximately 34Ks out of Auckland on the North Island The track is in a natural valley, surrounded by 450 acres of rolling hillside. With this exceptional natural advantage, much of the race track is visible from any point.
The layout is simple, without undue ‘frills', but because of the contour of the land it will be a challenging and rewarding track to drive. Unlike other tracks in New Zealand, this circuit has plenty of rise and fall. Added to this are two long straights and at least four good passing opportunities around the full circuit. The 3.8 km large circuit has 10 corners, six right hand and four left hand. The main straight is 1000 metres long, with a kink in the middle and a 11 metre rise and fall. The back straight is flat with a length of 800 metres. Circuit direction is clockwise.
Hampton Downs aims to provide an unforgettable experience to its visitors that will align each individual to a clients brand or company. This is achieved with the facilities ability to offer an optimum platform for international motorsport and key entertainment events and activities for customers and clients alike.
